What To Do When Your Diet Stalls

If you’ve been going about your diet, seeing great results, and then all of a sudden everything just seems to come to a halt, you’ve just fallen into the dreaded progress plateau.

Unfortunately this can be quite a common occurrence for those who are moving along any diet and workout programme, so is a natural part of the process.

This doesn’t mean that you have to toss in the towel when it happens though. Most dieters get highly frustrated as soon as it sets in and before they know it, they’ve fallen off the bandwagon entirely.

Let’s go over a few of the smart things that you could do instead to keep yourself moving along.

Take A Week Off

The very first thing to consider doing is taking a week off. At times, the primary reason why you’ve hit the plateau is because the body has slowed its metabolic rate down so low that it is next to impossible for you to lose any more weight.

A week off eating at a much higher calorie intake will jumpstart the body again so that when you move back down and start dieting again, weight loss resumes.

Not to mention a week off can often do wonders for your mental state, so can really save the day for many dieters.

Evaluate Your Calorie Intake

Another must-do if you’ve hit a plateau is to re-evaluate your calorie intake. Have you become less accurate in your calorie measurements?

Some people start letting little bites slide here and there without factoring them into their total, but those little bites can easily add up to 400-500 calories over the course of the day.

If you’re not careful, this could completely wipe out your calorie deficit entirely.

Count everything – it’s the only way to stay on track.

Change Your Workouts

The last quick fix to prevent a progress plateau is to consider changing around your workouts. If you head into the gym on a regular basis and do the same workout over and over again there’s every chance that your body has adapted to it.

Start doing something different. Do a new exercise, change the order or alter the set range.

Just do something to evoke change and see what  a remarkable difference that will make.

So there you have the quick fix strategies to get through any progress plateau. With smart techniques, this doesn’t have to keep you from reaching your goals.

Dumbbells Versus Barbells – Which Is Best?

One question that some people ask themselves as they go about their strength training is whether they should turn to dumbbells or barbells to boost their strength level.

Both of these types of strength training methods offer advantages, so it’s vital that you’re aware of these so that you can make the best decision for you.

Let’s look at the pros and cons to each.

Dumbbells

The first great thing about dumbbells is the fact that they’ll help to prevent all muscular strength imbalances.  Since one side of the body cannot compensate for a weaker other side while using dumbbells, you won’t run into this problem.

Second, dumbbells also offer more exercise variation. You can perform chest fly’s, lateral raises, as well as reverse fly’s with dumbbells, but with barbells you can’t.

Finally, dumbbells are also convenient for home gyms, so if you want to workout in the privacy of your home, these are typically the route to go.

Barbells

On the flip side, barbells are great for building strength. Most people will lift more weight with this piece of equipment, so if you want to maximise your muscle, this is the route to go.

In addition to that, barbells are going to be slightly more stable, so you can focus in on training the muscles you’re aiming to work.

With dumbbells, a great deal of effort will go into stabilising the movement, so you’ll have less energy to devote to the exercise itself.

Finally, barbells are great for compound lifts. Squats, deadlifts, bench press, rows, and shoulder presses can all be done very well with a barbell.

There’s no right or wrong choice here on which is the superior choice for you to select for your workouts, but more which equipment variation will best meet your current needs.

Great Low-Fat Breakfast Choices

Looking for a fast way to start your day on track? Breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day, as the saying goes, because it’s what will jump-start your metabolism and give you energy to get your day off to a good start.

Those who skip breakfast often end up turning to ‘quick fix’ foods mid-morning such as donuts or chocolate bars to get their blood sugar levels up. If you eat a well-balanced breakfast however, it’ll be smooth sailing until lunch.

Let’s look at a few of the top breakfast choices to help you get your day off to a good start.

Oatmeal With Protein & Peanut Butter

One fast and very easy option to start your day off well is to go for a cooked bowl of oatmeal with a scoop of protein powder stirred in.  Mix in some peanut butter, natural almond butter, or some chopped nuts for your healthy fats and add a few berries on top for flavor.

It’ll be a very well balanced meal that takes about three minutes to prepare.

Greek Yogurt Parfait

Consider whipping up a Greek yogurt parfait. Since most people aren’t getting their three servings of dairy products in, this is definitely a good choice.  Place some Greek yogurt into a bowl and then top with fresh berries along with flaxseeds or slivered almonds for your healthy fats.

This breakfast will come in around 250-300 calories, so is an easy add regardless of what your calorie intake is.

Scrambled Egg And Fruit

Another good breakfast meal is scrambled egg whites with diced vegetables, prepared in a bit of olive oil.  Top that with salsa, which also adds extra fiber to the meal and then serve some fruit on the side for carbs and antioxidants.

Scrambled eggs are a very high quality source of protein and one that you should consider adding on a daily basis.

Protein Pancake

Finally, if you have a bit more time, consider whipping up a protein pancake. Mix together some raw oats, egg whites, along with a half scoop of protein powder and then pour onto a skillet like you would a regular pancake.

Flip at halftime and then top with some natural peanut butter and half a sliced banana.

So consider any of these breakfast dishes to help you reach your nutritional goals and start the day with energy to spare.

Finding the time to cook each evening as you go about your busy lifestyle can be quite a challenge, but if you really want to reach your health and fitness goals, doing so is a must.

If you’re constantly eating dinner out at restaurants, or worse yet, eating drive-thru food on a regular basis, you can rest assured that your diet isn’t going to be doing all that well. Weight will creep on and you’ll become more frustrated than ever.

Fortunately, eating healthy at home doesn’t have to be difficult or that time consuming as long as you have a game-plan in place.

You need easy recipes that are high on nutrition and taste, while low on the time commitment front.  The following oriental beef stir-fry recipe is perfect. It’s rich in quality lean protein, high in fiber and antioxidants, and a good source of healthy fats that will keep your hunger levels low for hours to come.

Try this next time you need a quick dinner that boosts your energy and maximises your muscle recovery.  Feel free to use chicken or shrimp in this recipe as well if you prefer.

Ingredients

6 oz. lean beef, cut into bite sized pieces
1 tbsp. olive oil
2 cups diced vegetables – peppers, onions, mushrooms, carrots, snow peas
¼ cup chicken broth
1 tbsp. soy sauce
½ tbsp. pureed ginger
½ tbsp. minced garlic
1 tbsp. sugar
2 cups cooked brown rice

Heat the olive oil in a pan over medium heat.  Begin to sauté the vegetables until slightly tender and then remove from the pan.  In remaining oil, sauté the beef until it’s cooked through.  Add the vegetables back to the pan. In a separate bowl, mix together the chicken broth, soy sauce, pureed ginger, minced garlic, and sugar.  Pour into the pan and let simmer for 4-6 minutes while the flavors blend.

Remove and serve over a hot bed of brown rice.

Four Tools For Slimming Success

If you’re about to embark on a diet and workout plan, it’s vital that you prepare yourself for what’s ahead so that you can increase the chances that you do go on to see the results that you’re after.

Far too many people dive onto their programme without being fully prepared and all this is going to do is cause them to have problem after problem.

Let’s look at four tools that you should be arming yourself with as you prepare yourself for the time ahead.

A Pedometer

First, if you can get your hands on a pedometer, this is a great way to kick-start your plan.  Many people completely underestimate how much little bursts of activity will add up throughout the course of the day, so rather than focusing on doing hours in the gym each week – which many people will struggle to do – simply focus on increasing your step count instead.

This is a faster way to boost your daily calorie burn and is much less time intensive. Plus, if you can build more physical activity into your day, this is a habit you’ll maintain even after reaching your goal weight, which can then help make weight maintenance that much easier.

A Calorie Tracker

Next, also get a good calorie tracker. This could be a phone application or a computer software program, but either way, you want a method to assess how many calories you’re consuming along with the nutrient make-up.

It’s a must that you take in the right number of calories and macronutrients each day and this tracker will allow you to be more accurate in your assessment.

A Food Scale

Next, pick up a food scale.  Weighing and measuring your food is vital to making sure that you know precisely how much you’re consuming, so it’s a must that you are weighing things before you eat them.

If you aren’t, you could unintentionally take in far more calories than you thought you were.

A Journal

Finally, get your hands on a journal as well. Having some place to get your thoughts down when you get stressed or just overwhelmed can offer great release and help you stick to the plan long-term.

Especially if you deal with emotional eating, this will be incredibly important.

So there are four tools you must get a hold of to see faster slimming success. Are you missing any of them?
